Elevator Maintenance Crisis in Canada

Recently, there have been several articles published about the safety of elevators and the crisis Canada is facing with Elevator Maintenance. According to the National Post, last year in Ontario alone, firefighters responded to 4,461 calls to extricate people from elevators — more than a dozen a day — and double the number from 2001. The article quoted Rob Isabelle, a mechanical engineer and elevator consultant to property managers and owners, as stating “I don’t think we’re heading toward a crisis, I believe we’re already there. If we look at the reliability of a large number of pieces of equipment, it’s really the worst it’s ever been.”.

The root of the problem is a combination of the increase in the number of elevators — Ontario has seen a 10 percent increase over the past five years – as well as aging equipment.

According to Isabelle, thirty years ago a technician would typically service about 35 to 45 elevators for about $1,000 per elevator a month. The maintenance contract included everything needed to keep the elevators moving on a daily basis. Today, however, that same contract might be worth about $600 — with each technician responsible for over 100 elevators. With service technicians overloaded, preventive maintenance is falling to the wayside resulting in a rise in accidents, more elevator downtime, and an increase in costs for both building owners and elevator service companies. As well, property owners and managers — particularly those looking after older buildings — are increasingly dealing with an expensive dilemma as parts and experienced technicians familiar with the aging equipment become hard to find or disappear altogether.

Clearly, the status quo is not working and something needs to change. A comprehensive elevator management software solution can help your Elevator Company provide the highest quality preventive maintenance program that will keep you compliant with regulations, keep your customers happy, increase your revenues and keep elevators moving safely. With automatic alerts to notify you of your maintenance jobs, detailed checklists with tasks, all the historical data of previous work done and parts used, lists of all code required tests, and so much more, your elevator service company will always be organized, efficient and prepared for every maintenance job.

As customers continue to expect superior service, the number of elevators increases and government enforced regulations become even stricter, elevator contractors must stay on top of all Preventive Maintenance programs. With a comprehensive Elevator Contractor software solution, implementing these programs has never been easier.
