Elevator Safety Protocols Put Passengers First

According to the TSSA, compliance has been a longstanding challenge. Unfortunately, with more elevators in motion, there has been a decline in elevator companies performing the necessary maintenance to ensure the safety of these devices.

The TSSA has been working with the elevator industry to put in place new processes to ensure regular maintenance and inspections, as well as category 1 and 5 testing. Some companies have stepped up. Others, however, are not doing enough. The TSSA reveals that the category 5 test is one of the most common directions they have been writing.

Missed maintenance, inspections and testing are a serious problem. The TSSA has recently prosecuted several of these companies for not being compliant. The hope is that the prosecutions and subsequent fines will be a deterrent and these companies will work harder to stay compliant moving forward. The TSSA has also begun to restrict licenses for non-compliance. A company who is not performing their maintenance or category testing will have restrictions put on their licenses such as not being allowed to sell new construction work, no new modernizations, and no new maintenance contracts. Their business will be frozen and they will only be permitted to maintain what they have. Those companies will have to prove they can maintain their current devices before being allowed to grow their business.

Frequent code changes, varying jurisdictional regulations, and the highly technical nature of elevators themselves combine to create a complicated safety and compliance landscape. Before embarking on any installation or upgrade, owners and contractors should contact their jurisdictional authority and determine what codes apply to their project.

Trusted elevator contractors and maintenance companies who use an end-to end elevator service management software will have in-depth knowledge of codes and standards; they can help owners ensure that their elevators run legally, efficiently, and above all, safely.
